Vol. 253 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Tipperary Sawmills.

48.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware of the need to improve the conditions of employment, especially in respect of heating and ventilation, in Dundrum Sawmills, County Tipperary; and, if so, what steps he is taking to deal with the matter.

The Department have been carrying out work at Dundrum sawmills designed to improve the conditions of employment.

(Interruptions.)

We are on Question No. 48.

We are on Question No. 47.

I think the Deputy is mistaken.

I think the Ceann Comhairle is mistaken.

This includes improved toilet accommodation, wash basins, hot water. At present a heating system is in the process of being designed and it is hoped to have it in operation by next winter.

This will mean an additional question for next week.

Is the Minister aware that this matter has been under discussion by the trade union concerned and his Department for the past 12 or 15 months? Surely the Minister will agree that it is unfair that it should be left right through last winter when some type of heating and ventilation could have been introduced?

It is a difficult job to heat it on account of the nature of the building.

Very little effort was made.
