Vol. 253 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Defence Forces Strength.

79.

asked the Minister for Defence the total number of men in the Defence Forces in 1968, 1969, 1970 and 1971.

The total number of personnel of all ranks in the Defence Forces, including the Reserve Defence Force, as at the 31st March in each of the year mentioned in the question is as follows:—

1968

28,802

1969

29,017

1970

28,827

1971

28,405

That, of course, includes the FCA?

Could the Minister say, in relation to 1971, what is the number of the regular Army, leaving out both the first and second line reserves?

At 31st March, 1971, it was 8,663.

And there are 500 civil servants for that Army.
