The number of persons employed by vocational education committees in receipt of salaries of over £2,500 is 406 and their total remuneration amounted to £1,114,679.
There are no semi-State bodies operating under the aegis of my Department.

The capital indebtedness of vocational education committees on 31st March, 1971 was £8,713,853 and the cost of servicing it was £902,488.
Records are not now available to show the capital indebtedness on 31st March, 1956. The cost of servicing the capital debt in 1955-56 was £39,566.

In the great majority of cases, the salaries paid by State and semi-State bodies under the aegis of my Department are fixed by the bodies concerned, and are not subject to Ministerial approval. However, I understand that the number of employees of such bodies at present in receipt of £2,500 per annum and upwards is 358, and that the total amount of salaries paid to them annually is £1,204,303.

There were two such bodies under the aegis of my Department with debts for the year ended 31st March, 1956. The amount then involved was £532,420 and the cost of servicing it was £17,721.
There are currently four such bodies with debts. Their total debts (at 31st March, 1971 in two cases and at the most recent date for which the information is available for the other two) were £10,674,255 and the cost of servicing those debts was £786,756.
