Vol. 253 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Trade with Germany and Holland.

7.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state in respect of the year 1970-71 the value of imports from and exports to (a) Germany and (b) Holland.

In the 12-month period ending 28th February, 1971, imports from and exports to Germany (FR) were valued at £47.9 million and £12.8 million respectively. The corresponding figures for trade with the Netherlands were £18.9 million for imports and £8.8 million for exports.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary read the reply so that we can hear it?

I have a great interest in trade with Germany and we should be allowed to hear the Parliamentary Secretary.

I am only delighted to let the Deputy hear the reply. Naturally enough it is very difficult for the Deputy to hear me when the Fine Gael people are chattering away.

We did not interrupt until the Parliamentary Secretary spoke in such a way that we could not hear him.

If I could crave the silence of the Deputies for a few minutes the Deputy will hear my reply in my normal pitch and volume. The reply was that:

in the 12-month period ending 28th February, 1971, imports from and exports to Germany (Federal Republic) were valued at £47.9 million and £12.8 million respectively. The corresponding figures for trade with the Netherlands were £18.9 million for imports and £8.8 million for exports.

What are the Government doing about this disgraceful imbalance with Germany which has been continuing for years?

This is a statistical question. The Deputy's supplementary is a separate question.

It arises directly from the question.

Well, I will ask a question about it next week.

Ask the Minister for Industry and Commerce.
