Vol. 254 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Merchant Navy.

24.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power the number and size of ships on order for Irish owners; and the number of persons working at sea in the Irish merchant navy.

I have no information about ships on order for privately owned companies or individuals. The following ships are on order for the State-sponsored companies and the Minister for Defence:

Irish Shipping Ltd—4 bulk carriers of approximately 25,700 tons deadweight each;

B & I Co. Ltd.—a container vessel of approximately 2,550 tons deadweight;

Minister for Defence—a fishery protection vessel of approximately 1,000 tons deadweight.

At 31st December, 1970, the latest date for which figures are available, the total number employed on Irish registered ships, excluding fishing vessels, was 1,126.
