Newspapers and periodicals — both home and imported — are liable to turnover tax and wholesale tax. A breakdown of the receipts from these taxes in respect of individual commodities is not available.
Also, imported newspapers and periodicals are liable to customs duty. The approximate net receipts from this duty for the year ended 31st March, 1971, were £306,000.
Would the Minister be prepared to say whether there is a tax on them in Common Market countries?
In some of the countries, yes.
