andMr. Malone asked the Taoiseach the percentage of the work force unemployed at present and at corresponding dates in 1969 and 1970 in each of the employment exchange areas in that part of County Kildare in the constituency of Meath.

The following is the reply to Questions Nos. 75 and 76.

The data available relate to persons holding social insurance cards. The percentage unemployed is obtained by relating the number of insured persons on the live register to the estimated currently insured population excluding agriculture, fishing and private domestic service. For the calculation of the percentages all the local employment offices are grouped into eight regions. The percentages for the North Leinster Region in which the constituency of Meath is included were:—

%

mid-April 1969

7.5

,,,,1970(a)

9.9

,,,,1971(b)

7.7

(a) The figure is affected by the trade dispute at the cement factories.

(b) The figure may be marginally affected by the operation of the employment period orders, although agriculture, the industry mainly affected by the operation of the orders, is excluded in the calculation of the percentages.
