Compensation totalling £327,000 approximately was received from the Federal Republic of Germany in respect of the bombing in 1941 of the North Strand, Dublin. The final payment was made in 1958. The compensation was paid into the Exchequer.
Have any of the families who lost members received any compensation?
Yes. They were compensated, in fact, from the Exchequer. That is why the money was paid into the Exchequer, because it was recovered later. Details of this were laid before the Dáil in 1959.
Did the Minister say the money was paid out in 1959?
I said the details of the agreement between the two Governments were laid before the Dáil in July, 1959, but the people concerned had already been compensated by the Government here.
Was the amount paid by the Exchequer greater than the amount paid by the West German Government?
Yes, greater. It was £344,000 as against £327,000 recovered.
