Vol. 254 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Departmental Medical Advisers.

7.

asked the Minister for Health if he will state, with reference to qualified medical advisers in his Department, the number who have worked in hospitals in Ireland during the past 20 years; and the present grades occupied by the doctors in question.

Six medical advisers in my Department have worked in hospitals in Ireland during the past 20 years; four of these are in the grade of medical officer and two in the grade of assistant inspector of mental hospitals.

I wonder can the Minister indicate, if there are only six involved, in respect of each of them when they last were serving?

It would take too long to read all that. If the Deputy wants some information I can give it to him privately.

I would be grateful to the Minister if he would. Would the Minister consider setting up a panel of consultants who are actively engaged in hospital management having regard to the immense changes and the speed of change in systems and methods and these things generally in hospitals?

We propose to set up regional hospital boards and the regional hospital boards will have an expert staff working in them in order to examine the whole question of hospital administration. We have already met the boards of hospitals to discuss this matter and we also have a number of lectures being given under the auspices of the Public Institute of Administration on modern methods of hospital administration.
