Vol. 255 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish and EEC Commodity Prices.

8.

asked the Taoiseach the Irish and the corresponding EEC prices for beef, mutton, pork, butter, bread and sugar.

I propose to circulate in the Official Report a statement giving the retail prices of the commodities listed for the EEC countries, in so far as they are available, together with the Irish prices of corresponding commodities included in the consumer price index compiled by the CSO.

The EEC prices are taken from the latest report on prices issued by the statistical office of the European Community. They were derived from an inquiry into retail prices in larger specialised shops and departmental stores in April, 1970. They do not give, therefore, a picture of the overall level of retail prices in each country, but rather are intended to give a comparison between countries of the level of retail prices of certain commodities sold in these outlets. For this purpose the articles priced in each of the countries of the Community are, as far as possible, comparable.

The price data available for Ireland are the national average retail prices used in the compilation of the consumer price index. They differ in scope from the special purpose prices available for the EEC countries and may not be directly comparable.

Following is the statement:

asked the Taoiseach the value of livestock products consumed in farming households in 1970 estimated at (a) Irish and (b) EEC prices.

10.

asked the Taoiseach the value of sales for home consumption of meat and dairy products during 1970; and the value of such sales under EEC price conditions.

11.

asked the Taoiseach the value of this country's meat and dairy exports in 1970; and the estimated value at 1970 EEC price levels.

12.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state in respect of 1970 the output of meat and dairy products estimated at (a) Irish and (b) EEC prices.

With your permission, Sir, I propose to take Questions Nos. 9 to 12, inclusive, together.

The estimated value, excluding livestock changes, at Irish ex-farm prices of the output of livestock—excluding horses—and dairy products—including eggs—is about £259 million in respect of 1970. Of this total the estimated value of products consumed on farms without process of sale is about £12 million and the estimated value of sales for home consumption is about £83 million. These figures which are preliminary estimates are subject to revision. The exports of these commodities (including live cattle) at f.o.b. prices amounted to £146.9 million in 1970. The aggregates of output and exports are derived from detailed returns covering a large number of items. It is not possible from the information available to re-value these aggregates in the way requested by the Deputy.
