Vol. 255 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Tipperary Bog Development.

8.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if Bord na Móna are aware of the tremendous potential for turf development of the bog of Lurgoe, Killenaule, County Tipperary; and if they have any plans for its development.

I am informed by Bord na Móna that Lurgoe bog is one of a group of seven small bog areas lying south west of the board's Littleton Works and known in the board's records as the Killeen-Lanespark bogs. These bogs are of irregular shape and separated by roads and mineral land, and are too small for economic development by the board's present methods.

Could the Minister say what stretches of high bog there are in this area?

We carried out a survey of the area in 1955 and further investigation since the tabling of the Deputy's question indicates that the situation has not changed since then. In about seven areas there are stretches of high bog of 150 acres, 500 acres, 260 acres, 185 acres, 359 acres, 167 acres and 81 acres that would be suitable for development but, unfortunately, they are in different areas and are not one continuous development which is the only type of acreage suitable for development by the board's present mechanical machinery.
