Vol. 255 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Taistí Stáit Legislation.

12.

asked the Minister for Finance the number of loans granted in the last 12 months under Taistí Stáit legislation; the amount of each such loan; and the number of employees who as a result of each such loan (a) were maintained in existing employment or (b) were given new employment.

The following loans were issued by Taiscí Stáit Teoranta during the past 12 months—

£

Avongate Milk Products Limited

126,000

GWI Limited

10,000

Irish Worsted Mills Limited

100,000

Verolme Cork Dockyard Limited

154,600

Except in the case of Irish Worsted Mills Limited the amounts issued during the past 12 months represented only part of the total loans approved for the companies.

As regards the second part of the question the loans approved for Avongate Milk Products Limited and Verolme Cork Dockyard Limited were for fixed asset expenditure and formed only part of the total expenditure on the projects. The employment which the projects were expected to generate was 50 in the case of Avongate and 200 in the case of Verolme. The loans to GWI and Irish Worsted Mills, on the other hand, were for working capital and helped to secure the continuation of the employment of 300 in the case of GWI and 167 in the case of Irish Worsted Mills.

Is the Minister in the position that he has not taken into account offers made and announced in the newspapers? For instance, an offer made by Taiscí Stáit of an investment of £60,000 in a factory in Drogheda? I do not like to mention names.

The question was in regard to the number of loans granted in the last 12 months and that is the information I have given the Deputy. Off-hand I am not aware of the case to which he is referring but, on the terms in which he mentioned it, it would not come into this.
