Vol. 255 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cork Textile Company Grants.

53.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the amount of adaptation grants and technical assistance grants sanctioned and paid to a spinning company at Blackpool, Cork (name supplied).

54.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if his Department is aware that 146 jobs, which include employment for some 100 young married men, at a spinning company at Blackpool, Cork (name supplied) will be phased out by 2nd July, 1971, owing to reorganisation and rationalisation arising from the freeing of trade; and if he will make a statement on the future prospects of employment in this sector of the textile industry.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 53 and 54 together.

Grants were approved and paid to the company in question as follows:

Approved

Paid

Adaptation Grants

£63,500

£55,110

Technical Assistance Grants

£11,060

£10,738

I am informed that the disemployment involved arose from a reorganisation of the manufacturing activities of the group of which the company concerned is a member. I understand that the numbers affected are 110 of which 51 are married men. The company hope to absorb some of them in alternative production and the National Manpower Service is endeavouring to place the remainder in other employment.

Could I ask the Minister if the National Manpower Service in the Cork area has been active in endeavouring to have workers declared redundant placed in alternative employment?

I understand it has. The National Manpower Service interviewed redundant workers on 24th and 25th June and is now endeavouring to place the remaining workers in seven different firms.
