Vol. 255 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo Houses.

72.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that there is a serious shortage of houses at Swinford, County Mayo; and what steps will be taken to remedy the situation.

I understand that there is a need for only two or three houses in Swinford and that some vacant private houses in the town are to be examined by the local authority's engineer with a view to acquisition if suitable and if a reasonable price can be negotiated.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that it must be 20 years since a county council house was built in Swinford despite the best efforts of local councillors and that it is urgently necessary to proceed with the scheme immediately to provide houses for necessitous cases in that town where some people have the sad prospect of facing the winter almost homeless or living in dangerous conditions?

The Department have been informed by the local authority that there is need for two or three houses. This does not say that they are going to build any houses but if plans or proposals come to the Department for houses in Swinford or elsewhere they will be sanctioned within a reasonable time. The Deputy should do some homework.

No, I live within a few miles of the town.
