Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Departmental Committees.

asked the Minister for Health what formal or informal committees are at present in existence in his Department; the terms of reference of such committees; when they were set up; the cost to date; and when it is expected that the reports of such committees will be available.

The information is contained in a statement which, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to circulate with the Official Report. It is assumed that the Deputy is not concerned with bodies which have continuing functions and these are, therefore, excluded from the statement.

The information is as follows:

1. Working Party on the Psychiatric Nursing Services of Health Boards:

Set up:

30th October, 1970.

Terms of Reference:

To examine and report on the psychiatric nursing services of health authorities and to make recommendations in regard to changes and improvements necessary.

Cost to date:*

£226 (travelling and subsistence and incidental expenses).

Expected to report:

End of 1971.

2. Working Party on Survey of Work of Public Health Nurses:

Set up:

4th May, 1971.

Terms of Reference:

1. To measure the time devoted by Public Health Nurses to each of their separate duties, distinguishing between duties performed within and outside normal working hours.

2. To assess the proportion of nurses' working time given to the following broad categories of activity:

(a) actual nursing duties;

(b) clerical duties;

(c) non-nursing duties, if any, appropriate to other personnel;

(d) travelling time.

3. To assess any significant variations in duties and working time and their association with important relevant factors such as—

(a) type of area, e.g. urban or rural;

(b) training;

(c) supervision.

4. To make recommendations about the area and size of the population which could be served satisfactorily by a Public Health Nurse on district duties.

5. To make recommendations relating to the Public Health Nursing Service having regard to the findings of the survey.

Cost to date:*

£30 (travelling and subsistence).

Expected to report:

About May 1972.

3. Working Party on Grading and Job Evaluation in Health Boards:

Set up:

January 1971.

Terms of Reference:

To make recommendations on the appropriate number of grades and on a suitable system of job evaluation for administrative and clerical work in health boards and local authorities at present undertaken by grades up to and including the senior executive officer grade.

Cost to date:*

£1,000 (cost of consultants' services).

£500 (travelling etc. expenses).

Expected to report:

Within a few weeks.

* The costs shown do not include officers' salaries.
