Vol. 255 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Agricultural Wages and Holidays Legislation.

32.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he will state with reference to his reply to a question on 19th November, 1970, when it is proposed to introduce legislation to give effect (a) to the report of the inter-Departmental committee on existing legislation relating to wages and holidays for agricultural workers and (b) to the representations made to his Department.

I hope to have the views of all interests concerned in the near future on the question of the agricultural workers' legislation to which the report relates. Consultations with these interests will then be held and a decision taken on the recommendations in the report and on the need for any new legislation.

Would the Minister hazard a guess as to when the legislation will be introduced? Next session?

I am awaiting the observations of the farming organisations.

Surely there is a limit to the time that should be allowed?

I hope to get their observations pretty soon.

It does not seem to be very important to them. It is unfair that it should be held up like this.

The observations of the rural workers union were made available on 28th March and those of the IT&GWU were made available on 26th May.

But there has been no comment from the farming organisations?

Not so far.
