Vol. 255 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Water Pollution.

69.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will give a breakdown of the constituent expenditures involved in his estimate of £35 million for the cost of eliminating water pollution, quoted by him in the Dáil on 27th May, 1971.

The figure of £35 million was intended as an indication of the order of expenditure estimated to be needed to carry out a comprehensive programme of sewage treatment works. It was calculated on the basis of the services required by our population together with an allowance to cover industrial needs. I may mention that I have asked the inter-Departmental working group on air and water pollution, which I set up recently, to carry out as part of their investigations a detailed assessment of the costs involved.

Does that apply to coastal waters or to inland sewerage only?

It applies to public sewerage.
