Vol. 255 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Limerick Technical Institute.

14.

Mr. O'Donnell

asked the Minister for Education when the proposed regional technical institute in Limerick will be open for the admission of students; and whether the institute will be separated from, or linked with, the proposed third level higher educational institute.

I expect that Stage I of the proposed technical institute in Limerick will be open for the admission of students in September, 1973. There will be no direct link between the technical institute and the proposed institute of higher education but I would assume that the technical institute will provide a source of recruitment of students for the institute of higher education.

Mr. O'Donnell

In view of the fact that there has been a good deal of rumour about this whole matter in Limerick, would the Minister say if I am right in taking from the reply that the technical institute will open in 1973?

Mr. O'Donnell

May I have an assurance from the Minister that the third level institute will open in 1972?

I am having discussions on that understanding. Yes, it will open in 1972.

Mr. O'Donnell

Is there doubt then about having the third level institute open in 1972?

No. If I might give a direct answer to the Deputy—yes, it will open in 1972.
