Vol. 255 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Apprentice Boys' March.

1.

asked the Taoiseach if, in view of the serious risk of disorder and the grave consequences likely to arise from such disorder, he will make representations to the British Government to prohibit the proposed march, known as the March of the Apprentice Boys, in Derry on the 12th August.

The views of the Government in regard to this matter and in regard to parades generally have been conveyed to the British Government. I stated the Government's position in relation to such parades in reply to a question in this House on Tuesday, the 29th June.

Is the Taoiseach aware of the very serious apprehension that exists in Derry lest the particular parade referred to in the question should take place and have specific representations been made to the British Government on this matter?

I am aware of the apprehension to which the Deputy refers. Our views concerning the situation have been conveyed to the British Government. May I suggest to the Deputy that further discussion of the matter at this stage might not be helpful in achieving the result that we both desire.
