Vol. 255 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Defence Forces' Property.

58.

asked the Minister for Defence the number and extent of barracks and other property held by his Department in the State; the cost of maintenance; the number of troops in each barracks and the rates payable thereon.

The number of properties owned or administered by my Department is approximately 90, excluding FCA halls, huts and rented premises. The total area is approximately 21,000 acres. The total estimated cost of maintenance for 1971-72 is approximately £900,000 of which £734,000 is for civilian labour.

The total amount of contribution in lieu of rates paid to local authorities in respect of all Department of Defence properties for the year ended 31st March, 1971, was £296,000. It would not be in the interests of security to furnish information about the number of troops in each barracks.
