Vol. 255 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Reconstruction Grant Applications.

85.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, in view of the importance of securing information on the number of new dwellings being created by subdividing existing dwellings, he will arrange for relevant information to be furnished in future in connection with applications for reconstruction grants, or, if this information is already furnished, he will arrange for the returns based on these applications to show in how many cases a new dwelling is being created.

The information referred to by the Deputy is already furnished to my Department in cases where reconstruction grant applications involve the creation of additional dwellings. Since, however, the number of new dwellings created with the aid of reconstruction grants is insignificant, it is not considered that any useful purpose would be served by compiling or publishing statistics of such dwellings. Estimates made by my Department of dwellings provided by the conversion or enlargement of existing dwellings are not based on reconstruction grant activity but on an examination of census data and on information provided by local authorities.
