Vol. 255 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Atlantic Air Fare Levels.

25.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power the measures taken by the Government to influence the Atlantic fare levels to ensure that such fares are not contrary to the interests of this country's national airlines.

My approval is required under the Air Navigation and Transport Act, 1965 for rates and fares charged on air services between Ireland and points abroad. In the exercise of this function I normally have regard to the decisions of the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Aer Lingus participate fully in IATA fares conferences and press for fares and fares policies which are favourable to their own interests and to our tourist and business interests. IATA decisions on fares must be unanimous.
