Vol. 255 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Census Returns.

6.

asked the Taoiseach when it is expected that the preliminary returns of the April census will become available; and when the final returns are expected.

It is expected that the preliminary report of the 1971 census will be issued in September of this year. This report will contain preliminary population figures for counties, county boroughs, urban and rural districts compiled from provisional summaries submitted by enumerators.

Volume I of the 1971 Census Reports, which will contain definitive population figures for district electoral divisions, towns and larger units of area, is expected to be issued in mid-1972.

Will the provisional figures which the Parliamentary Secretary mentioned be used as a guide in rearranging constituency boundaries for the next general election?

I would imagine that they could be availed of in the context.

They would be considered to be official figures?

I would imagine that that may be the position, yes.
