Vol. 255 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bord Fáilte Allocations.

23.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he will state in respect of each of the years 1970-71 and 1971-72 the amounts allocated to Bord Fáilte for resort development works and the sums allocated by the board to south-west Cork for such work.

The reply is in the form of a tabular statement, which with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to circulate in the Official Report.

Following is the statement:

Year

Amount allocated to Bord Fáilte for Major Resort Development

Sums expended by Bord Fáilte in South-West Cork

1970-71

£400,000

£38,112

1971-72

£250,000

£1,800

In order to avoid a tabular statement, I confined my question to cover a period of two years. Surely there is no need for a tabular statement in order to reply. Would the Minister be kind enough to give the information that is contained in the tabular statement? It cannot be a very lengthy document.

The reply is set out in the form of a tabular statement. It is not a very long statement but I would have to give the headings. In the year 1970-71 the amount allocated to Bord Fáilte for major resort development was £400,000. The sum expended by Bord Fáilte in that year in south-west Cork was £38,112. In 1971-72 the amount allocated to Bord Fáilte for major resort development was £250,000 and the sum expended by Bord Fáilte in that year in south-west Cork was £1,800.

I am glad that the Taoiseach is present because of his association with south-west Cork. Would the Minister who is acting on behalf of the Minister for Transport and Power agree that an allocation of £1,800 is a reasonable and fair allocation to an area such as south-west Cork, taking into account the hundreds of miles of coastline in the area and the many resorts for which money is needed urgently?

Allocations up to then have been very good. I see that a sum of £104,309 was spent on resort development in west Cork which must include south-west Cork, up to the year 1970. That was not bad. I wish Donegal fared as well.

An expenditure of £104,000 since the establishment of the board is nothing to brag about. As a Corkman, the Taoiseach must know that this allocation——

Just for the record, would the Deputy put a question?

——is not fair or just. do not know, Sir, in what way you define a question. You have made mistakes recently in your definitions. This matter is very important for south-west Cork. There is much need for money for resort development. The Dáil will probably adjourn within a week or two and there will not be further opportunities of raising this question.

Question No. 24.

The Taoiseach should use his influence in this regard.
