When a vacancy occurs, whether casually or otherwise, in cases where I have responsibility for the appointment I look for some suitable person in accordance with the criteria which I gave in answer to a question on the 17th June, that is, someone whose appointment will help to ensure the successful operation of the body concerned. This person is then appointed in accordance with the requirements of the relevant statute or, as the case may be, the articles of association of the body concerned.
