Vol. 255 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Student Nurses' Working Hours.

3.

asked the Minister for Health whether he proposes to recommend a reduction in working hours for student nurses in voluntary hospital training schools.

A claim for a reduction in the working hours of the student nurses referred to is at present the subject of correspondence between the Hospitals Commission and the Irish Nurses' Organisation. The commission has offered to meet representatives of the organisation to discuss the matter fully. I am awaiting the outcome of such a discussion.

Will the Minister be making any recommendation himself at any stage during the discussion?

I could not say that. I am awaiting this meeting.

Is the Minister aware that his predecessor made a recommendation?

The Deputy knows I have done a great deal to improve the conditions of nurses. Leave the matter to me.

Not for student nurses though.
