Vol. 255 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Donegal Harbour.

53.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries whether he is aware of the grave need for enlargement of anchorage facilities at Greencastle, County Donegal; and what he proposes to do about the congestion presently obtaining in the harbour.

A large-scale scheme of works for the improvement of Greencastle harbour, which is based on the recommendations made by the Donegal survey team, is under active examination in my Department at present but I cannot at this stage say what improvement works may be finally approved or when they may be commenced.

Does the Parliamentary Secretary and the Government appreciate that the two jobs which were proposed on the coast adjoining Greencastle have not been carried out? Part of their usefulness would be to give immediate relief to the congestion at Greencastle and this would enable the Government and the Department to do the major works at Greencastle. These works cannot be provided for three or five years. The jettisoning of the safe anchorage at Glengad and elsewhere has affected the livelihood of many and has prevented the development of Greencastle as a thriving fishing port.

The only information I have available to me here about Greencastle is that I am very much aware of the necessity to carry out work there. I understand what the Deputy has said with regard to the other improvements which are taking place.

I would like the Parliamentary Secretary to bear in mind that the works now proposed at Glengad will be no help in relieving congestion at Greencastle. They merely improve landing facilities. Incidentally, the works at Glengad were only sanctioned between the putting down of my question last week and the answering of it.
