Vol. 255 No. 18

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Airport Landing Charges.

15.

Mr. O'Donnell

asked the Minister for Transport and Power how airport landing charges in this country compare with those in Britain, Europe and the USA.

A comparison of the airport charges, including landing fees, passenger load fees and lighting charges, payable by the airlines at 15 major Western European airports including Heathrow Airport shows that Dublin and Shannon fall between 5th and 10th place for varying aircraft types.

Landing charges vary at different USA airports. Comparing New York with Shannon, the New York charges after taking account of the $3 a head tax on international passengers, are approximately 30 per cent higher than the total Shannon charges for the same type of aircraft.

Mr. O'Donnell

Could the Minister say whether or not the fixing of landing charges is subject to international convention or is it a matter for each individual country? There is some confusion about this.

Landing charges are a Government matter.
