Vol. 255 No. 18

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Institute of Horology.

41.

asked the Minister for Education if any scholarships are available to assist pupils wishing to attend the Institute of Horology in Blanchardstown, Dublin; and, if not, if steps will be taken to have them made available.

Scholarships are available from vocational education committees to assist pupils wishing to attend the School of Horology in Blanchardstown.

Could the Minister say how many vocational authorities make such scholarships available and if it is true that in some cases there is a problem because there are not sufficient pupils to enable the holding of a competition and for that reason grants are not being made available in some areas?

My information is that where a student is recommended by the headmaster of the school as being suitable for this particular type of work, it is then a matter for the committee to consider the situation. I understand that 13 committees have made provision for the current financial year.

Am I correct in saying that this can be done in the absence of any competitive examination?

I do not know what exact regulations will be laid down by particular committees. The competition is held by the School of Horology.
