29.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will outline (a) the counties or portions thereof which are at present designated areas or underdeveloped areas for the purpose of special grants; and (b) the differences in grants, subsidies and allowances given to (i) a designated area, (ii) an ordinary area and (iii) Dublin city.

(a) The designated areas at present are Counties Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim, Roscommon, Mayo, Galway, Kerry, Cavan, Longford and Monaghan; County Clare with the exception of the Shannon Free Airport area; most of West Cork; the townland of Derrinlough and a number of townlands in the Clara area, both in Offaly; a number of townlands in the Drumcolliher area of County Limerick.

(b) The statutory maxima laid down in the Industrial Development Act, 1969 for grants towards the cost of fixed assets of industrial undertakings are 60 per cent in the designated areas and 45 per cent elsewhere. The current administrative rates are—

(i) new industry grants: 50 per cent or £5,000 per job whichever is the less, in designated areas; 35 per cent or £4,000 per job, whichever is the less, in other areas (excluding Dublin); 25 per cent or £3,000 per job, whichever is the less, in the Dublin city area;

(ii) small industry grants: 60 per cent in designated areas; 45 per cent elsewhere except the Dublin area; 35 per cent in the Dublin city area;

(iii) re-equipment grants: 35 per cent in designated areas; 25 per cent elsewhere.

Other financial aids offered by the IDA for example, training grants and research grants, do not differentiate as between location in designated areas or elsewhere.
