Vol. 256 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment Statistics.

22.

Mr. J. Lenehan

asked the Taoiseach the number of persons registered as unemployed in the Republic on 30th September, 1970 and 30th September, 1971.

The number of persons on the live register on 1st October, 1971, was 56,537 and the number on 2nd October, 1970, was 58,999. The operation of the employment period order in 1971 affects the comparability of the figures.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary say when the present figure was higher in the last five years?

I do not understand the Deputy's question.

The Parliamentary Secretary gave the figure for 1971 as 58,900 unemployed.

The figure I gave was for 1970.

1969, 1968. Anything?

If the Deputy looks at the question again, he will find that I did not give those figures.

I thought the Parliamentary Secretary might have the figures there.

I have not got them offhand.

That is a separate question.

23.

asked the Taoiseach the total level of unemployment at the latest date for which figures are available.

The total number of persons on the live register on the 15th October, 1971, was 58,306.
