Vol. 256 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tax Offices.

41.

Mr. J. Lenehan

asked the Minister for Finance if tax officers were sent from Dublin each day to places such as Navan while competent officers are resident in these places; and the amount per mile payable in travelling expenses to these officers.

It is presumed that the Deputy is referring to tax assistants who are sent by inspectors of taxes to make local inquiries in certain cases.

Tax assistants are not sent to any one place each day. They may be sent to any place in the tax district where the inspector wishes inquiries to be made.

The fact that a particular tax assistant maintains his residence in a particular place cannot be regarded as a factor governing the inspector's administration of his office or as giving that tax assistant a right to be assigned to duties in his home area.

Travelling expenses are payable at rates ranging from .070p per mile to .092p per mile according to the size of the motor car used.
