Vol. 256 No. 6

Written Answer. - Border Bridges.

254.

asked the Minister for Local Government what arrangements exist between local authorities in Border areas for the maintenance and repair of bridges which straddle rivers and other water courses the centres of which mark county boundaries; and, what steps can be taken by one local authority to recover from another the cost of repairing damage done to such bridges.

Works involving the maintenance and repair of cross-border bridges are normally carried out following consultation and agreement between the local authorities concerned. I would refer the Deputy to the provisions of section 41 of the Local Government Act, 1955. With regard to the second part of the Deputy's question it would be open to a local authority to seek admission of liability and agreement to compensate or otherwise to avail of the normal civil process in an appropriate case.
