Vol. 256 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Offences Against the State Act.

122.

Mr. J. Lenehan

asked the Minister for Justice the number of persons (a) imprisoned following conviction under the Offences Against the State Act, 1939, and (b) interned between 1st January, 1941, and 1st January, 1958.

With regard to (a), the only available statistics are that from 1939 to 1946 there were approximately 500 convictions under the Offences Against the State Act, 1939; that there were no such convictions between 1946 and 1956; and that in 1957, 111 persons were convicted under the Act and sentenced to imprisonment.

As regards (b), 589 internment orders were made in the period referred to in the question.

Some of the persons involved were sentenced more than once and many were interned on the expiration of prison sentences or were interned on more than one occasion.
