Vol. 256 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Motor Insurance.

38.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is prepared to examine the existing insurance requirements on visiting motorists, with a view to giving more effective coverage in respect of injured parties.

I do not accept that the existing insurance requirements for visiting motorists, which are the same as for all other motorists, are inadequate to provide compensation for damages to third parties. Nevertheless, if the Deputy has information about a case of hardship and supplies particulars to my Department, the matter will be investigated.

I have it from legal men that this difficulty exists. I am surprised that the Minister and his Department are not aware of it. I shall supply the Department with the evidence I have in the next week.

We would be very pleased to receive the information. I am sure we can clarify the matter.

Is there a provision whereby health boards can recoup the cost of hospital treatment from the insurance policies of visiting motorists?

Claims against visiting motorists are really what are referred to here. I am sure that costs arising out of accidents can be included in any claims made and claims can be dealt with under existing arrangements.

The remaining questions will appear on tomorrow's Order Paper.
