Vol. 257 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cattle Live Weight Gains.

75.

andMr. Creed asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries what figures were available on live weight gains under similar conditions for Charolais, Fleckvieh, South Devon, Blonde d'Aquitaine, Hereford, Friesian, Aberdeen Angus, and Shorthorn cattle.

Figures for live weight gains under similar conditions in Ireland are not available for all the breeds of cattle mentioned in the question. There are no Blonde d'Aquitaine cattle in the country and South Devon and Fleckvieh cattle have only recently been imported. In the case of the other breeds, comparison trials with some breed crosses have been held by the Agricultural Institute and as I indicated in my reply to the question on 22nd June, the results have been published in scientific journals and the annual reports of the Institute.
