Vol. 257 No. 5

Written Answers. - Membership of EEC.

91.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he will state the effect of EEC membership on the composition, powers and functions of (a) the Pigs and Bacon Commission, (b) An Bord Gráin, (c) the Potato Marketing Board and (d) An Comhairle Olla.

I would refer the Deputy to relevant aspects in this connection mentioned in my Department's publication "Irish Agriculture and Fisheries in the EEC". As I indicated in my reply to a question by the Deputy on 25th November, the functioning of such bodies in the context of EEC membership is being considered at present both at official level and by the farming and other interests concerned.

93.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if the provisions of the amended proposals on the structural reform of agriculture submitted to the Council of Ministers of the European Economic Community mean that the guidance section of the common agricultural fund of the European Economic Community may provide up to 1,000 dollars to national Governments for the training of each socio-economic adviser appointed to provide socio-economic advice to farmers; and if the training of such socio-economic advisers in Ireland will necessitate any change in the system of higher agricultural education.

The submissions made to the Council of Ministers contain a proposal on the lines referred to by the Deputy. It is envisaged that the proposal, if approved, could readily be implemented within the framework of our existing system of higher agricultural education and training.
