Vol. 258 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Appointment of Medical Officers.

20.

asked the Minister for Health if he is aware that Sixmilebridge, County Clare, which has a population of over 500, has no permanent dispensary doctor; and if he will arrange for the appointment of one pending the introduction of the choice of doctor scheme.

21.

asked the Minister for Health how soon it is expected that an appointment as medical officer at Shannon Airport, County Clare, will be made; and if he will make a statement in the matter.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 20 and 21 together.

Shannon Airport and Sixmilebridge both lie within Newmarket Dispensary District, which is served by a temporary medical officer at present. The Mid-Western Health Board has requested the Local Appointments Commissioners to recommend a person for permanent appointment as medical officer for the district. The commissioners expect soon to be in a position to make a recommendation.

I am not aware of any other medical officer appointment to be made in the area. The post of airport medical officer at Shannon Airport is filled. This is a Civil Service appointment in the Department of Transport and Power, the duties of which include duties in relation to the prevention of infectious diseases on behalf of the local health board.

Did the Minister not think it fit to take up this matter with the Minister for Transport and Power since it relates so closely to health problems?

So far as I know the combination of these two officers provides sufficient medical services in the area.

Is this a subject which I can take up with the Minister for Transport and Power?

No problem.
