Vol. 258 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Hotel Charges.

33.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power when the commission on hotel charges was set up; its composition; and when its findings will be announced.

The Government have decided that the scope of the Prices Acts should be extended to a number of additional areas including hotel and catering charges. The effect of the Prices (Amendment) Bill, 1971, which has just been circulated, will be to bring these charges within the scope of the National Prices Commission.

Did the Minister not state last week that a commission had been set up to deal with this matter?

That is the commission I am talking about, the National Prices Commission.

Have they been set up?

Yes, and the purpose of the Bill which has been circulated is to bring hotel and catering charges within the ambit of the National Prices Commission which has been set up.

Are the commission investigating increased charges at the present time?

The Deputy will appreciate that the commission cannot do that until the Bill recently circulated has become law.

But the Minister told me last week a commission had been set up.

Yes, but the legislation has not been enacted.
