Vol. 258 No. 9

Written Answers. - East Coast Tourist Figures.

320.

Mr. O'Donnell

asked the Taoiseach the number of tourists disembarking at all sea ports on the east coast during 1971 or for the latest year for which figures are available.

The only information available regarding the number of tourists coming to the State is that published in the annual article "Statistics of Numbers and Expenditure of Visitors to Ireland and Irish Visitors Abroad", in the Irish Statistical Bulletin. On the basis of a sample passenger card inquiry and passenger movement figures it is estimated that in 1970 575,000 visits to Ireland were made by persons resident outside the State, who travelled by sea from Great Britain. In the sample inquiry respondents are asked to indicate the reason for their visit. On the basis of the replies the following classification of the total of 575,000 has been obtained.
