asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he will consider special measures to encourage increased investment in fish processing in the West of Ireland to ensure that local employment benefits fully from EEC market opportunities.

Investment in the fish processing industry is encouraged and assisted financially by the scheme of grants operated by the Industrial Development Authority and, where appropriate, in Gaeltacht areas by assistance provided by Gaeltarra Éireann. I am satisfied that the State aids so provided are operating smoothly and I would welcome increased use of these aids by cooperative societies and private enterprise up to the limits determined from time to time by availability of fish supplies.
