Vol. 258 No. 10

Written Answers. - Unemployment Figures.

289.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state the percentage of the insured population currently on the live register of unemployed (on the same basis as the figures given in Table 17 of the Trend of Employment and Unemployment published by the Central Statistics Office) at the latest available date and at the same date last year in each of the following local employment office areas: Navan, Trim, Kells, Edenderry, Maynooth, Drogheda, Ardee and Castlepollard; and if he will account for any major changes which have taken place.

Percentage figures corresponding to those published in Table 17 of the Trend of Employment and Unemployment are not compiled in respect of individual local employment offices because the separate totals for each office for insurance cards exchanged and insurance cards lodged are not always directly comparable. Insurance cards are not necessarily exchanged at the local office area of employment nor are they necessarily exchanged at the same local office in successive years. On a regional basis the possible distortion is relatively small and percentages are therefore compiled on a regular basis for each region. The local offices specified in the Deputy's question are all located in the North-Leinster region. For this region the percentages of insured persons on the live register—excluding agriculture, fishing and private domestic service—was 9.1 in mid-December, 1971, and 7.4 in mid-December, 1970.

The following are the number of insured persons on the live register at mid-December, 1970, and mid-December, 1971, for each of the local offices specified.
