Vol. 258 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Heifer Hygiene Regulations.

72.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is satisfied that strict hygiene regulations are enforced at sales of ring test and 14 days tested heifers.

The general standard of hygiene to be observed at sales of livestock are laid down in regulations made under the Livestock Marts Act, 1967. My Department are and for some time have been taking steps to ensure that existing livestock marts are brought up to the required standard.

All sales of cattle within the brucellosis controlled area are governed by regulations designed to prevent the transmission of this disease and the sales in question are supervised by the local district veterinary office staffs. Outside this area, sales of milk tested and 14-day tested stock are also supervised by these officers and tested animals at these sales are segregated from untested stock.
