Vol. 258 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - EEC Commissioner.

3.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state the proposed annual salary and allowances of the Irish-appointed Commissioner of the enlarged EEC.

Members of the Commission receive a basic annual salary of £13,400 and an annual representation allowance of £1,200. They are entitled also to head of household and residence allowances amounting to 5 per cent and 15 per cent respectively of basic salary, and dependent child's and school allowances of approximately £170 and £150 per annum respectively for each child. Removal, installation and travel expenses are also payable.

Higher basic salaries and representation allowances are paid to the President and Vice-Presidents of the Commission.

Would the Taoiseach agree that the Commissioner is not appointed as is indicated in the question but that he is nominated by the Irish Government and is appointed unanimously by the Council of Ministers and that any member has the right of veto over the appointment?

That is the case. In effect whoever we will select will, I am sure, be acceptable to the other members.

Unless it is somebody who is persona non grata.

I wonder would it be Deputy FitzGerald.

I was thinking of a Deputy on the other side of the House.
