Vol. 258 No. 11

Written Answers. - Parking of State cars.

148.

asked the Minister for Justice what instructions are given to drivers of State cars to ensure that these cars are not parked at positions on the public roadway at which other vehicles drivers would commit an offence if they parked; and what action is taken to ensure compliance with such instructions so as to avoid setting a bad example to the public or causing traffic jams.

149.

asked the Minister for Justice the circumstances in which a State car (number supplied) parked on a double yellow line within 25 feet of the traffic lights at Leonard's Corner, Dublin, on 12th January last between 12.30 and 1 p.m. thereby causing a major traffic jam on the South Circular Road for a third of a mile.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 148 and 149 together. I understand that the Deputy wrote to the Commissioner, Garda Síochána, on 12th January alleging obstruction and illegal parking by the car in question, and that he suggested that the driver be prosecuted. The action, if any, to be taken by the Commissioner in relation to allegations of minor traffic offences of this kind is a matter for him to decide and I do not interfere in these cases.

In these circumstances I think it would be inappropriate for me to make any comment or give information in relation to the matter.
