19.

(Cavan) asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the amount paid in fees to counsel in respect of appearances in the Dublin Metropolitan District Courts for the year ended 31st December, 1971, or in respect of the last 12 months for which figures are available.

The information sought is contained in a tabular statement which, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to have included in the Official Report.

Total

17,018.85

(Cavan): Could the Minister conveniently give me the total figure?

£17,018.85.

(Cavan): Might I suggest to the Minister that the work done by barristers in the Dublin Metropolitan Court could be equally well done, and more economically, by full-time solicitors in the Chief State Solicitor's Office if the appropriate staff were recruited to that office?

The Deputy knows it is not my function to decide who should or should not appear in court. I am not sure who is the appropriate person to answer such a question, but I do not think I should attempt to pursue the matter off the cuff, which is what I would be doing now if I were to reply to the Deputy.

(Cavan): Did the Minister see a newspaper article on the subject recently?

(Cavan): I suggest that the Minister should make inquiries about this particular newspaper article and see whether or not it was well-founded.
