Vol. 259 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - An Coimisiún Dumpála.

38.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the number of representations made to An Coimisiún Dumpála in 1971 and how long an coimisiún took to give a decision on them.

During 1971 a total of 38 complaints of dumping were made to An Coimisiún Dumpála. I understand from an coimisiún that the duration of the investigation of particular cases varied in accordance with the complexity of the complaint and the amount of supporting data supplied by the complainant in the first instance. Where such data was, in fact, supplied an coimisiún has found that it was able to reach a decision in relation to complaints made in 1971 in about nine to ten weeks on average.

Nine to ten weeks on average?

This is the point I was on with the Minister last week. This is too long. The damage is done by the time the nine to ten weeks are up. The market has been depressed and I would ask the Minister to introduce new legislation to see that there can be immediate action taken to ensure that where goods are landed at dumped prices they will not be released on the market?

I agree with the Deputy, it appears to be a bit long all right. We will try to shorten it.

Will something be done about it?

We will get after it, yes.

Question No. 39.

It is not being got after.

I agree with the Deputy's point.

There will be no problem about looking after it now.

When can we expect the legislation to control dumping on the spot without this nine to ten weeks delay?

I will refer this to my colleague and he will deal with the commission established by the Government. I certainly take the view that nine to ten weeks is a bit long.

(Interruptions.)

Question No. 39. We cannot discuss this question at length at this stage. This is inordinate.
