Vol. 259 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Traffic Warden Scheme.

27.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will expand the national school traffic warden scheme so that all schools on busy roads will be provided with a warden.

I take it that the Deputy's question primarily relates to the provision of adult school wardens. Under section 96 of the Road Traffic Act, 1961, the provision of school wardens is a matter for the local authority concerned, subject to the consent of the Commissioner of the Garda Síochána.

Recently, following a pilot experiment carried out in Carlow, several local authorities have appointed, with the agreement of school authorities and the consent both of the Garda authorities and the parents involved, teams of junior school wardens who are senior pupils of primary schools to operate outside their own schools. A gradual expansion of this scheme is taking place, but before a junior warden scheme is introduced, all the circumstances must be carefully examined and the full agreement of all parties involved secured. Any assistance I can give in promoting this work will be given gladly.
