Vol. 259 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sorting Office Parking Facilities.

161.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware of the request of the staffs employed at the Central Sorting Office, Dublin, that because of the traffic congestion in the vicinity of the office, the lack of adequate general car parking facilities and the high incidence of malicious damage to cars in the area, limited permission might be granted to staffs to use the official garage park; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware that there have been staff complaints of lack of car parking facilities at the Central Sorting Office. I understand that no formal request on behalf of the staff has been received for permission to park private cars in the official garage but I am satisfied, in any event, as a result of a special examination, that it is not practicable to provide even limited car parking accommodation in the garage for the staff.

The Minister is aware that a request to use a disused park at the back of Amiens Street was made?

Yes, we tried to lease it.

CIE have stated that they are not using it, that they are not going to use it, but they will not give it to the Minister.

That is so.

Would the Minister not bring some pressure to bear on his colleague, the Minister for Transport and Power, in this impasse? I suggest the Minister should get a CPO on to it.
