Vol. 259 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Army Training.

51.

asked the Minister for Defence if it is intended to introduce compulsory Army training; and, if so, when.

As I indicated on 3rd February, 1972, in reply to the debate on the Estimate for Defence, compulsory military training is a matter which might be considered in the future. It is not provided for in existing legislation and is not being considered at present.

Could the Minister indicate when he will consider compulsory training?

(Interruptions.)

I did not ask the Minister for Local Government. Let him look after his own Department, of which he is making a very bad job. Will the Minister for Defence tell me if it is his intention to introduce compulsory Army training in the near future?

I hope it never happens.

There are no plans for the introduction of compulsory military training.
